Heavy winter rain is a fact of life in the UK and for many homes, gardens, and driveways, that can mean one thing: flooding. Whether it’s pooling water on patios or soggy, unusable lawns, poor drainage can cause real headaches once the wet weather sets in.
The good news? With the right materials and a bit of planning, you can protect your property before the next downpour hits.
At Avon Material Supplies (AMS), we provide drainage aggregates, pipe bedding, and sand that help manage surface water and prevent flooding across Dorset and the South West.
Why Drainage Is So Important
When rainwater can’t drain away naturally, it builds up on the surface, damaging paving, foundations, and soil. Over time, that trapped water can cause long-term problems like subsidence or erosion.
Installing drainage systems, like soakaways, trenches, or shingle-filled channels, allows excess water to move freely into the ground rather than sitting where it shouldn’t.
Materials That Help Manage Surface Water
AMS supplies a range of drainage materials designed to improve water flow and protect outdoor spaces:
- 10mm or 20mm Drainage Shingle – Ideal for soakaways, garden drainage, and paths.
- Washed Shingle – Provides support and stability around underground drainage pipes.
- Sharp Sand – Creates a free-draining layer beneath paving, helping to prevent pooling.
These materials are available for collection or delivery, and our friendly team can advise on the best option for your project.
Sustainable and Local
We also offer recycled aggregates, produced at our Canford facility from recovered construction materials. They’re a great eco-friendly alternative to quarried stone and perfect for anyone looking to make their project more sustainable.
